Turtle Facts
The loggerhead shares the same threats that menace
all marine turtles. Because such a significant percentage of the
world's loggerhead population lives in Gulf and southwest Atlantic
waters, shrimp fishing, gill netting, and activities associated with
offshore oil and gas exploitation are particularly dangerous to this
species.

Accomplishments
When you join the Friends of Emerald Coast State
Parks, you will be helping to enhance and support our parks in
numerous ways. Some of the projects accomplished by the Friends
include:

Funding for a children’s playground at Henderson
Beach.

Funding for nature trails in both parks.
-
Working with park staff and the Audubon Society
to build an educational kiosk at Rocky Bayou.

Providing an educational kiosk at Henderson
Beach.

Funding a new ranger/welcome station at Rocky
Bayou.

Forming a partnership with the Boeing Company to underwrite sea
oats restoration at Henderson Beach.
- Acquiring partial funding through community grants for park
improvement projects

Working with park staff to maintain the parks.

Working with park staff to maintain the
indigenous environment and to protect endangered species. This
includes helping with pine reforestation, planting sea oats, and
protecting the loggerhead turtle.

Sponsoring interpretive programs and community
events, such as Pioneer Cooking, Archaeology Day, and the annual
Easter egg hunt at Rocky Bayou.

Providing kayak and canoe rentals at Rocky
Bayou.

Providing visitor support services, such as
laundry facilities and ice, at campgrounds.

Establishing and maintaining visitor stores in
both parks.

Supporting park volunteers with rewards and
recognition.

Supporting hurricane clean-up crews by providing
water, food, and supplies.
- Providing memorial benches and plaques.
