Turtle Facts

The Loggerhead is the most common sea turtle in Florida.

It is named for its large head. It has powerful jaws that crush mollusks, crabs and encrusting animals that are attached to reefs and rocks.

An estimated 14,000 females nest in the southeastern United States each year.

Citizen Support Organization

Our CSO is named Friends of Emerald Coast State Parks.  The governing board of our CSO meets on the second Thursday of each month at 2:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Henderson Beach State Park's entrance station.  The meetings are open to the public.

The CSO is a valuable source of volunteers. Members help on special work projects. They serve as guides and docents in exhibit and interpretive areas and conduct tours or special programs. Through outreach programs, the CSO can provide educational activities, newsletters, pamphlets, booklets and other informational material. It can help state park managers communicate a park's specific management needs and plans to the community.

A CSO can raise funds, seek and receive grants, accept gifts and bequests of money, as well as tangible property and real property. These funds can provide additional equipment, buildings, programs and renovation according to the needs and plans for the individual park. The overall statewide goals of Citizen Support Organizations are to help our state parks provide interesting, educational and entertaining visitor services. The guideline and basis for citizen support is the Florida Park Service Mission... To provide resource-based recreation while interpreting and restoring natural and cultural resources.  CSO members are volunteers, but volunteers are not required to join the CSO.  Please read our CSO Bylaws for additional information.
